2018 in Books

Another wonderful year of reading thanks to your fabulous recommendations. Take a look at the full breakdown here:
Quick stats:
-142 books (that’s about 2.7 books/week)
-46,511 pages (that’s about 127 pages/day)
-71% female authors
-Just 25% authors of color–gotta work on that next year
-I stopped finishing books I didn’t like and would never go back
Favorites:
Novel of the year: Pachinko by Min Jin Lee (a sweeping novel about four generations of a Korean family living in Japan)
Nonfiction of the year: Astoria by Peter Stark (required reading for Northwesterners all about the colonization of the PNW)
Favorite sci-fi: Becky Chambers’ excellent trilogy, recommended by the wonderful Nina Trotto
Most delightful: A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
Most empowering (#pun): The Power by Naomi Alderman
Best graphic novel: The Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson
Don’t read any more books without reading this one: So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo
Most fun: Sourdough by Robin Sloan, recommended by my fabulous high school librarian Deb Hunt
Most tearful: The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George
Honorable mentions: The Vaccine Race by Meredith Wadman, Free Food for Millionaires by Min Jin Lee, the Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi
P.S. There are two pages of graphs in the visualization, in case you’re curious how this year’s stats stack up to last year’s.
P.P.S. Here’s the raw spreadsheet if you want to see every book I read this year along with ratings: Blair Books 2018
